ORTHODOX EASTER SUNDAY
REMEMBERING AN EASTER BALLADE
I remember the Easter six years ago: Every feeling was dying,
I remember still trying, singing songs, while busy with sailing or flying,
I remember the girls all around saying, "Socky, you look in good form!"
I remember my voice cracking down, my face deform.
But I tried to play and sing and forget why I was so distracted,
and if anyone knew me before, could not know, I had packed it,
Athina and Manolis were there, those two friends asked me only,
but I said, I was feeling alright, maybe just a bit lonely.
ECO DA LONTANO: never worry, Manoli.
It's so strange to feel lonely with one's dear old friends all around,
I just wished you will never feel this in your life, Edeltraud,
those guitars, those bouzoukis, those fiddles, Easter time celebrating,
and among all of them me and you our old records updating.
No mistake, you were there, although no one show you but me,
you had set me describing this fiesta, alone, by the sea,
here it goes this long ballade, my first in a longer narration,
in a par with the Long Eastern Orthodox Greek Celebration.
That's how AVRA looked when we arrived,
the "tricky northern road" having survived,
Good Friday high noon, "not much", you'd say,
just six of us, still early in the day.
I'm writing this long song as an addendum,
our gathering in minutes took momentum,
text messages, phone calls, the news were spreading,
Kyrva and its locality in threading.
And so before too long we counted thirty,
amending my pure thoughts I made them dirty,
but then I lost the plot and gave up counting,
my dreams before my eyes to nil amounting.
This heavy fasting day ends up in feasting,
within me I have feelings for you twisting,
the wish, the curse, the love, became entwined,
the song, already started, re-defined.
'Don’t know what day it is or where I am,
somebody serves me a big plate of lamb,
my voice, rough as it is, I hope it carries,
this joyful song by Markos Vamvakaris:
LYRICS ROUGH TRANSLATION
Within Kavala's little alleys where I used to wonder,
I met a young lass and I was always taking about her.
She had enviable eyes and little red lips,
she had a beauty spot on her cheek, and two jointed eyebrows.
She had an enviable body, and whoever was looking at her,
was wounded deep in the heart, while she was smiling.
When I show her I've lost my marbles due to her beauty,
she stole my heart away and made it her possession.
